About this product

BSFL oil — a high-lauric insect lipid with unique functional properties

Black soldier fly larvae are naturally high in fat — approximately 29–35% on a dry weight basis — with a distinctive fatty acid profile dominated by medium-chain saturated fats. The most significant of these is lauric acid (C12), which typically comprises 35–45% of the total fatty acid content.

Lauric acid is well established in animal nutrition for its antimicrobial properties. It is particularly active against gram-positive bacteria, including several pathogens relevant to poultry and aquaculture. In aquaculture feed formulation, BSFL oil is increasingly used as a functional lipid ingredient rather than simply an energy source.

Compared to fish oil, BSFL oil offers a more stable supply, a British-origin provenance story, and a sustainable production narrative that resonates with premium feed manufacturers. It does not require the fishing industry supply chain that underpins fish oil.

Market context

The growing role of insect oil in animal nutrition

Fish oil has long been the dominant lipid ingredient in premium aquaculture and pet food formulations. Its supply is constrained by wild fish stock availability, its carbon footprint is high, and its price is volatile. BSFL oil is an emerging alternative that addresses all three issues while adding functional antimicrobial properties that fish oil does not provide.

Early research on BSFL oil in salmon diets has shown comparable or superior growth performance compared to fish-oil-based diets, with potential immune benefits from the lauric acid content. This is driving increasing interest from aquaculture feed formulators in Northern Europe, including UK salmon and trout producers.

We offer BSFL oil as part of our wider trade product range. It is a developing product line and we discuss availability and volumes individually with interested buyers. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
