Buy live Calci WormsWhy your garden birds need calcium — and why most food doesn’t provide it
Wild birds in the UK have declining access to natural calcium sources. Earthworms, snails and insect larvae — the traditional sources of dietary calcium for many garden birds — are less abundant than they were a generation ago. This matters most during spring breeding season, when female birds require 30–40 times their normal calcium intake to form eggshells. Without it, eggs fail to calcify properly.
Live Calci Worms are one of the most calcium-dense live foods you can offer garden birds. Their slow, wriggling movement makes them highly visible and attractive to ground-feeding and low-perching species. Unlike dried mealworms — which have lost most of their moisture and much of their nutritional value in processing — live BSFL retain full moisture and maximum calcium.
When to feed Calci Worms to wild birds
Spring (peak)
Critical. Female birds need calcium for eggshell formation. Feeding daily from March–June is the single most impactful thing a garden bird feeder can do.
Summer
Supports fledglings and second clutches. Parents use high-protein foods to provision chicks rapidly. Calci Worms are ideal nestling food via parent birds.
Autumn
Birds building condition before winter. Protein helps moult recovery and fat accumulation. Particularly valuable for migratory species passing through.
Winter
Invertebrates are scarce in cold soil. Live Calci Worms fill the nutritional gap — particularly for robins and thrushes which rely on soft-bodied prey.
How to offer Calci Worms to garden birds
Shallow dish or tray: Place a shallow ceramic or plastic dish at ground level or on a low bird table. Pour a small amount of Calci Worms in and keep it topped up. Ground-feeding birds will find them within minutes of the first visit.
Live food feeder: Dedicated mealworm feeders with mesh sides work well. The movement of the larvae through the mesh attracts birds visually.
Scatter on the lawn: Particularly effective for blackbirds and thrushes. Scattering worms in a small area mimics their natural foraging experience of finding prey in soil or leaf litter.
Morning is best: Birds are most actively foraging in the 2 hours after dawn. Offering fresh Calci Worms at this time maximises uptake.
Quantity: A tablespoon or two per session is plenty for a typical garden. Offer daily during spring breeding season; 3–4 times per week at other times of year.
