How to Soak Dried Calci Worms Before Feeding to Birds
Soaking dried calci worms (calciworms) in warm water before feeding is a simple habit with real benefits. Here’s the method, why it helps, and when you can skip it.
How to soak dried calci worms, step by step
- Measure out your calciworms. Put the amount you plan to offer in a shallow bowl. A tablespoon or two suits most garden sessions.
- Cover with warm water. Pour enough warm (not boiling) water over to cover them. Warm water speeds rehydration.
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes. Leave to soak until they swell and soften.
- Drain and offer. Drain off excess water and offer straight away in a shallow dish or scattered on the ground. Use within an hour.
Why soaking helps
- Moisture: birds need water alongside food, especially in summer. Soaked calciworms provide hydration with nutrition.
- Safer for nestlings: soft food is easier for parent birds to carry and feed to chicks than hard, dry pieces. This matters most in April and May.
- Appealing texture: rehydrated calciworms more closely resemble live prey, which many birds, especially robins, find attractive.
- Easier for hedgehogs: soaked food adds moisture, which helps in dry weather.
When you don’t need to soak them
Soaking matters most in spring (nestling safety), summer (hydration) and when feeding hedgehogs. In cold winter weather you can offer them straight from the bag, and birds will happily eat them dry. If you’re in a hurry, dry is perfectly fine: soaking is best practice, not a hard rule.
